About Shilvington

Shilvington has been owned and farmed by the Bartlett family since the 1930s. Set in the hamlet of East Shilvinghampton, the farm sits in a quiet valley between Portesham and Upwey, with far-reaching views in both directions. It’s well placed for exploring some of Dorset’s best-known spots, while still feeling tucked away and peaceful.

The Jurassic Coast is just a short drive away, along with Weymouth’s sandy beach. Nearby villages, walking routes and open countryside offer plenty to explore – whether you’re here for a few days, returning regularly, or visiting with family. It’s a place to slow down, roam freely and enjoy the outdoors together, where children can explore, build dens and spend the day outside.

A Family-Run Farm

Now in its fourth generation, Martin and Joby lead the day-to-day running of the farm, continuing a way of life that has been shaped here over decades.

You’ll often see Martin (fondly known as Farmer Barty) working around the farm, and both he and Joby are always happy to chat about farm life or introduce you to some of the animals.

Farming here centres around a herd of Limousin cattle, alongside wheat, barley and grass grown across the surrounding land. Over time, Shilvington has also opened its doors to guests, offering the chance to stay on a working farm and experience it for yourself.

More recently, eight thoughtfully positioned cabins have been introduced, offering a unique opportunity for those looking to own their own place in the countryside. A wood-fired sauna is also available to book — a simple, restorative way to unwind, whether you’re staying on the farm or just visiting for the day.

Life on the Farm

Animals are part of everyday life here – something younger visitors especially love – from farm dogs and cats to hens, horses, goats, alpacas and, of course, cattle out in the fields. For those who want to get a little closer, alpaca walks offer a relaxed and memorable way to spend time on the farm.

The farm’s low-intensity approach also supports a wide range of local wildlife. Deer, hares, foxes, rabbits and pheasants are often spotted, along with buzzards and other birds of prey overhead.

In autumn, the hedgerows fill with sloe berries, which you’re welcome to pick and take home – perfect for making your own sloe gin.

Shilvington Beef

Limousin cattle form the Shilvington herd, known for their lean meat, calm temperament and distinctive golden-red colouring. The farm takes great pride in its animal husbandry, with all livestock part of a national farm assurance scheme.

The cattle are bred and reared on the farm, with calves staying with their mothers for most of their first year. As Limousins are typically born smaller, the calving process is more straightforward for both cow and calf. The young cattle grow quickly, thriving on a natural diet of milk and grass, only coming indoors when the fields become too wet to support them.

Beef is available to buy directly from Martin and Joby, whether you’re staying on site or visiting. During the warmer months (April to October), the honesty shop is open, offering beef and prepared meals – ideal for enjoying during your stay or taking home. Shilvington beef is also supplied to a number of local pubs and restaurants.

Our careful, considered approach results in high-quality beef with a rich flavour and excellent texture.

A Place to Come Back To

It’s not just somewhere to stay – it’s the land, the people, and the feeling of being here.
